Fulton County Retired Teachers Meet at the Fulton County Historical Museum
June 25, 2015
President Jeri Good called the meeting to order and led in the Pledge to the Flag. Rev. Smail asked the blessing before the lunch served by the staff of the Museum.
First time attendees were John Fearnow and wife Holly as was Paula Shotts were introduced. Rev. Rick Smail asked for help with an upcoming fundraiser to help John with expenses after an accident and recent surgeries. Details will come later.
President Good also read a letter from Marilyn Jackson about the Macy Community Center being built and proposed tutoring of students and asking for volunteers from FCRTA. She requested information of volunteers to be on an “on call” basis, probably after second semester since the Center is under construction and with the wet weather will not be finished until October. If interested, contact her at Marilyn Jackson, P.O. Box 56, Macy, IN 46951, msj@rtcol.com
Kay Horn, secretary had prepared minutes if anyone wanted to read them, otherwise they had been emailed before the meeting. Treasurer’s report was $645.99.
President Good presented certificates from IRTA to outstanding volunteers Kay Horn, Ilene Howard and Marge Zartman for their many volunteer hours to the community.
Ilene Howard, Kay Horn, Patti Hiatt, and Linda Wade attended the 50th Representative Assembly in Indianapolis. Linda received the AMBA clock award for her 648 volunteer hours of service. Mrs. Howard told of “A Hand Up” auction held and how the bidding went and what happened to Fulton County’s basket. There are articles anyone may purchase with the money going into the FCRTA treasury. New officers were installed and outgoing officers were honored for their years of service. Nancy Tolson was given a quilted wall hanging heart Kay Horn had made and Carol Grieser was given her choice from the auction basket and she chose the Schnabeltier bottle of wine from the local winery.
Patti Hiatt introduced the special speaker Debbie Phillips, a 1981 RHS graduate who had a presentation about the 1999 Columbine School shooting. Mrs. Phillips’ niece Rachel Scott was killed in that tragedy. The presentation detailed in an NBC multi-media video told of the traumatic events of that terrible day and the after effects to those who lived through it. Excepts from the journal Rachel kept detailed the depth of her feelings toward her classmates who maybe were less fortunate than she.
Hugs are important and sometimes that is all someone needs to keep them from doing something drastic. Love is powerful. The mentality of “ it only matters if you get caught” is how some kids react to situations they get mired down with. People never know how far a kindness will go. Tomorrow is never promised and we all need forgiveness. If we don’t forgive people who hurt us, we’ll become just like them. If we want to be forgiven by God, learn to forgive others.
Debbie and John Phillips are taking their message to schools and leaving an impact that life is full of purpose. Not only is this telling Rachel’s story, but it is making something positive from a senseless act that took place at Columbine.
The next retired teacher’s meeting will be on September 17, with a place to be determined later.
Kay Horn closed with the Ten Commandments Cowboy style and the meeting adjourned.
