with 23 retired teachers and Mayor Smiley attending.
President Ilene Howard welcomed everyone and asked the blessing on the meal.
Mrs. Howard recognized Karmin Reeves for being honored by the Rochester & Lake Manitou Chamber of Commerce with their coveted Community Service Award for the work she has done in our community.
Several items of business were taken care of and then Katie McCarter, Community Service chairperson presented Mayor Mark Smiley with a check replica for the 8,729.5 volunteer hours with a worth of $21.80 per hour or a total value of $190,106.90 the retired teachers of Fulton County have earned. This was 1,055 volunteer hours for youth activities and 7,665.5 volunteer hours for other activities. This was an increase over last year of 1,027 hours with 29 teachers reporting.
The Top Ten volunteers were recognized. They were Karmin Reeves, Ilene Howard, Kay Horn, Kaleen Krom-Davis, Ann Dielman, Marge Zartman, Judy Climie, John Howkinson, Phyllis Whitmore, and Katie McCarter.
Kay Horn read the Secretary’s report and treasurer’s report . There was $87 sent to the State Scholarship committee to help with 8 scholarships to be given in June at the Representative Assembly and $50 to Junior Achievement to help with the Bowl-A-Thon. Dues for 2013 were collected.
There is a need for state committee participation. Mrs. Howard is on the Retirement Committee and encouraged others to get involved.
Our retired teachers group is also in need of someone to keep the Archives up-to-date. If this position sounds like something you’d like to do, contact Ilene.
Other members who are doing jobs for the retired teacher group were Sandy Denton, Media Contact; Katie McCarter is Community Service and keeps record of the volunteer hours everyone turns in. Kathy Christman does the Computer Graphics/Letter writing; Carol Walker does the Necrology reports, Kaleen Krom-Davis does meeting locations and arrangements; and Joan Ewing and AlonaLeininger are calling people about meetings. Connie Terpstra volunteered to chair the Archives committee.
A committee was appointed to contact the new retirees about our next meeting on June 27, 2013 at the Moose Family Center at 11:30 with Robin Burkett preparing the meal. The committee is Karmin Reeves, Jeri Good, Kay Horn, and Ilene Howard.
The Representative Assembly will be June 19, 2013 in Indianapolis
Mrs. Howard handed out applications for membership or associate memberships to the state organization.
After adjournment several teachers went to Rochester High School and toured the New Tech High program.
The retired teachers touring the high school liked some of the things they saw in New Tech High. Some do AP classes, so do Ag and shop classes and oral and written communication is strongly stressed. There is group work but students can be fired if they don’t do their share of the work. Many of the classes had good hands on materials; the Bio-Med class for one; the Robotic class where students make their own robots; the class where they make their own boats and then test to see which ones are more sea-worthy. Some students take Ivy Tech courses for college credit. One student has already completed one year of college. Taking Ivy Tech classes saves students college dollars as the classes at Ivy Tech are free. Many kids take 2 classes a year.
One teacher liked seeing text books in the classroom and the emphasis on oral and written communication. Another teacher liked all the activities and things the Special Education Life Skills class does and how they work to raise funds for their activities.
Mr. Ronk and Mr. Snyder helped with the tour of New Tech High.
