The Fulton County Retired Teachers met at Wynnfield Crossing for their spring meeting on April 24, 2014. President Kaleen Krom lead in the Pledge to the Flag, read an inspirational thought and Kathy Christman played piano as we sang the Blessing Song.
After lunch, Katie McCarter, Community Service chairperson introduced the top volunteers for 2013 and presented a check replica to Mayor Mark Smiley in the amount of $178,161.08. This represented 7,901.6 total hours from 32 reporting teachers. Top Volunteers were Carol Calloway, Linda Wade, and Phyllis Whitmore who were nominated for Honorable Mention Awards. Karmin Reeves was nominated for Outstanding Volunteer and the Clock Award. Rounding out the top ten were Kaleen Krom, Kay Horn, Ilene Howard, John Howkinson, Phil McCarter, Galen Smith, and Marge Zartman. Mrs. McCarter then introduced Cheryl Downs who will take over the Community Service position for 2014.
Gordon Bohs reported on the Reading Program and passed around a paper to sign up to read to students at Riddle School for the next school year and also talked about the Literacy Coalition and asked if anyone would be interested in being a tutor to contact him at The Fulton County Public Library.
Kay Horn, secretary read the minutes of the October meeting and gave the treasurer’s report.
The Fulton County Choral Club under the direction of Joyce Jones entertained the teachers with a medley of songs. Two members of the retired teachers association Kathy Christman and Linda Wade are members of the choral group.
Two retired Winamac teachers joined us for the meal. They are Alice Mooi and Joan Drach.
Stephenia Barkman and Rosemary Clemons told of the WAVE program being promoted by Paul Shirley for Tippecanoe Valley, Caston, and Rochester Schools. WAVE would promote cognitive reading skills for students.
